DTL wins Medilink Award for Growth

International demand for a non-animal method of safety testing products or chemicals on the skin for the pharmaceutical industry has helped Dermal Technology Laboratory win the prestigious Award for Outstanding Growth at the highly competitive West Midlands Medical and Healthcare Business Awards 2010.

Organised by medical technology industry specialist MedilinkWM, the awards shine the spotlight on the success of companies within the Medical Technologies Cluster, supported by Advantage West Midlands, and Dermal Technology Laboratory will now go on to represent the region on the national stage at the Medilink UK Awards in March.

Living proof that the medical and healthcare sector is bucking the recessionary trend, Dermal Technology Laboratory Ltd is just two years old but the company’s turnover has increased four-fold, while staff numbers have increased by 50 per cent in the last year. Judges praised the company’s excellent standards of customer service, and its state-of-the-art facilities at the Keele University Science and Business Park has impressed international visitors.

Professor Jon R Heylings, Professor of Toxicology at Keele and Chairman of DTL, commented: “We’re thrilled to win such a prestigious award which is a great recognition of our sustained growth. We have invested in our staff, expertise and facilities and with support from the UKTI Passport to Export programme, were able to exhibit at international conferences, which has helped us win new business from Europe, the USA and Japan.

“We’re confident we can continue our success, especially in light of our new collaboration with Keele University’s Faculty of Health, which is enabling us to develop dermal delivery of anti-infective agents, aimed at combating MRSA and other types of hospital infection.”

MedilinkWM’s CEO, Tony Davis, added: “West Midlands companies have seen the real commercial benefits of trading within the Medical Technologies market in the last year, which has nurtured innovation, new product development, international sales growth and thriving start-ups.

“These awards are dedicated to businesses that have achieved exceptional research, innovation, business success, entrepreneurial flair and growth in the sector and the bar has been raised yet again, so it’s an amazing achievement to win.”
