The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the operational management of DTL laboratories. This involves close liaison with Management, Study Directors, QA and the Technical Team. Working very closely with DTL Management, the Laboratory Manager will provide first class facilities and specialist support service to enable the scientific staff to conduct studies for regulatory and research purposes. Main Responsibilities: The purpose of the post is to provide technical and scientific support optimising the laboratory time, staff and facilities, planning the workload and managing the technical team. The job holder will be the first point of call for all building and laboratory related technical issues and will need to establish a close relationship with Management, Study Directors, QA and the Keele Science Park Facilities Manager. Key Duties 1. Operational management of Technical team and laboratories Responsible for the efficient management of the laboratories, equipment, calibration and maintenance , compliance of the facility Planning of studies in the laboratories to optimise the use of the facility, provide high quality data to Study Directors, act as a gateway to ensure data is complete to the Study Directors Provision of training to new staff and students on use of equipment 2. Equipment First point of call for the procurement of all laboratory equipment Responsible for the management of laboratory equipment to include setting up appropriate service contracts, repairs, calibration, validation, dealing with breakdowns and supervision of service engineers. Responsible for management of all record keeping relating to the above. Establishing and maintain database of equipment and production of annual timetable for scheduled service visits. Filing of all service reports. Oversee the correct and timely installation of new equipment. Have an understanding of running costs, maintenance and training requirements. Responsible for ensuring the compliance of electricity at work regulation/ PAT. |

3. Contingency planning Assist the Management in compiling a contingency plan to include identification of key business critical risks, risk reduction strategies, back up facilities etc. To ensure an annual review of risks are carried out and the contingency plan is updated periodically. 4. Deputy Safety Officer 5. Compliance Producing SOP’s, carry out risk assessments, COSHH, manage permit to work system and provide training Experience Essential: Demonstrable experience in laboratory management in a scientific or bio-medical environment (minimum 5 years). Demonstrable ability to prioritise and manage time effectively. Experience in supervising and training staff. A degree or equivalent qualification or significant directly relevant experience. The ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
Desirable: Experience in dermal penetration studies. Use of radiochemicals Knowledge of GLP Relevant IT skills. Knowledge and demonstrable experience of interpreting and applying Health and Safety regulations and procedures in a laboratory facility. Experience of acting as a Safety Officer. Experience of liaising with and managing multiple groups / departments Demonstrate financial management
