DTL established an Advisory Board in 2007.  In addition to the DTL Exec Directors, the Board comprises a Non-Exec Chairman, Professor Andy Garner, plus two Non-Exec Directors, Sir Robert Boyd and Mr Ian C Tordoff.

Professor Garner is the Dean of the Faculty of Health at Keele University.  He has a long association with Jon from their days at ICI Pharmaceuticals together.  A pharmacologist by background, Professor Garner has held senior positions in academia, the NHS and pharmaceutical sectors.  After obtaining a PhD in pharmacology, he undertook postdoctoral research in Uppsala, supported by the Royal Society and Swedish MRC.  He joined AstraZeneca (then ICI) in 1978 as Head of GI Research and was appointed Company Senior Scientist in 1982.

Professor Garner spent 1993-97 in the United Arab Emirates as Professor of Pharmacology and Research Dean in the country's first medical school. He was R&D Director, then Executive Director at Hope Hospital, one of the three major teaching hospitals in Manchester, before moving to the University of Manchester to become Head of the Medical School in 2002.  He has published over 100 papers, edited six books and is a recipient of the Research Gold Medal of the British Society of Gastroenterology.

Professor Garner was instrumental in DTL setting up at Keele University. He has provided sound advice and guidance since Jon and Dave first visited Keele Science Park in 2006.

Sir Robert Boyd is Greater Manchester NHS R&D Director. He has enjoyed a distinguished academic career. He was Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Manchester and Dean of the Medical School from 1989 to 1993. In 1996 he became Professor of Child Health and Principal, St George's Hospital Medical School and was Pro-Vice Chancellor (Medicine) of the University of London from 2000-2003.

Sir Robert was also Chair of Manchester Health Authority from 1994-1996. He has previously been Assistant (now Academic) Registrar of the Royal College of Physicians of London, Chair of the Academic Board of the British Paediatric Association (now the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health) and is an Honorary Member of the American Pediatric Society. He was Chair of the Council of Heads of UK Medical Schools in 2001-3.

In the last four years Ian Tordoff and his colleagues have secured more than £1.5bn deals between independent providers and DH / NHS. These agreements have required leading the collaborative development of innovative solutions to complex infrastructure, clinical, workforce, IM&T, legal and financial challenges. Before 2004, Ian led large scale business transformation and deal executions in automotive, finance and telecoms markets.

Whilst representing Ernst & Young Global, Ian was responsible for programme roll-out across 24 European countries and later as Director of an ISP, led the consolidation of diverse e-commerce businesses in the Nordic and Benelux markets.

Ian spends most of his time in London, where he is currently leading two pathfinder projects for PCTs, however his UHNS NHS / NED responsibilities and family ties ensure he is a regular visitor to North Staffordshire.
