In Vitro Epidermis Screening Test (INVEST)

Predicts whether a surfactant-containing product is potentially irritant to skin by testing skin integrity before and after application.

Two measures of skin integrity in the SIFT

· Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL):

- if epidermis is damaged, it allows more water through it.

· Electrical Resistance of the skin (ER):

- if epidermis is damaged, the electrical resistance falls.
